In a sharp police raid on Saturday, a peon named Sanju Sharma was caught carrying out an illegal fetal‑sex test at a private clinic in Morena district, Madhya Pradesh. Sharma, who works for the District Education Department, was found holding a portable ultrasound machine and attempting to determine the sex of a fetus – an act that is strictly banned for non‑medical reasons in India.
The operation was led by Health Department teams from Gwalior and Morena, backed by social worker Meena Sharma. Police officer Padmesh Upadhyay, the district’s Chief Medical and Health Officer, explained that a “decoy” woman and a plain‑clothes policewoman set up the sting. As soon as Sharma started the test, the team seized the machine and arrested him on the spot.
Chief Officer Padmesh Upadhyay said the raid followed a tip‑off and was directed by District Collector Lokesh Jangid. He also reported that a complaint had already been filed at the Civil Lines Police Station, and the seized ultrasound device will be kept for the investigation.
Sharma was immediately handed over to the local police for further questioning. The investigation revealed that, until recently, he had been a peon posted at Bilgaon Middle School. He had actually been suspended in November 2024 after similar illegal activities were uncovered.
A senior Health Department official revealed that Sharma had been under surveillance for the last six months, after a man was arrested in Jaipur for selling a portable ultrasound machine. That man informed police that Sharma was conducting illegal sex‑determination tests. “Since then, he has been under surveillance and was caught red‑handed,” the official said.
It is clear that identifying a fetus’s sex for non‑medical reasons is illegal in India. The police continue to investigate Sharma’s network and related illegal practices, aiming to prevent future violations in Morena district and beyond.
