On Thursday, a legal petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court’s vacation bench over the assault on BJP MP Khagen Murmu in Nagrakata.
Advocate Anindiya Sundor Das urged the court to order a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe and highlighted that Murmu belongs to a Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Scheduled Caste (SC) community. The bench approved the filing, and the case will be heard on October 14.
A separate petition from BJP leader Bijon Goswami also asks the court to launch Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and NIA investigations after police officers struck both Khagen Murmu and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh during the attack.
Jalpaiguri police said they arrested two suspects—Shahanoor Alam and Tofail Hossain—around 3 am on Thursday in the Nagrakata area. The arrests were announced as part of the effort to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Shankar Ghosh commented that the arrests need to be proven to be genuine. “We must first confirm whether the arrested are linked to the incident and not just a show‑off,” he told . He added that the attack was severe, with attempts to kill both leaders during a landslide and flood relief mission in North Bengal. The incident has intensified political tensions, with the BJP criticizing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
