Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the 64th anniversary of the Indo‑Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on Friday, praising the force’s courage, discipline and humanitarian work.
On X, Modi said, “Warm greetings to all ITBP Himveers and their families on their Raising Day. The Force embodies unmatched courage, discipline and devotion to duty.” He added that ITBP soldiers work in the toughest climates and terrains, standing guard on India’s 3,488‑kilometre China border – from Ladakh’s Karakoram Pass to Arunachal Pradesh’s Jachep La.
PM Modi highlighted the force’s role in disaster relief and rescue missions, noting that ITBP’s rapid response during natural calamities reflects the nation’s finest traditions of service.
Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan also sent his congratulations early in the day. In a message on X, he praised the “brave heroes who stand as the first line of defence” and commended their “tireless vigilance, humanitarian service and dedication” that inspire confidence in India’s security.
The ITBP, established on October 24 1962, operates at altitudes between 9,000 and 18,800 feet, where winter temperatures can drop to minus 45 °C. Its training goes beyond basic policing; soldiers learn mountaineering, skiing, and intensive tactical skills.
Beyond border patrol, the force tackles internal security threats, including anti‑left‑wing operations in Chhattisgarh. Its reputation as the first responders in Himalayan disaster relief comes from hundreds of search, rescue, and aid missions conducted over the years.
This year’s celebration underscored the vital role ITBP plays in protecting India’s Himalayan frontiers and serving communities in crisis.
