Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his popular monthly radio show, Mann Ki Baat, to celebrate how young Indians are breathing fresh life into Sanskrit and other traditional forms of Indian culture.
Youth turning ancient words into trending content
Modi applauded the creativity of today’s content creators who bring Sanskrit, spirituality, philosophy and music into memes, reels and stories that millions of young people share on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. “When people hear Sanskrit, they picture Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas and ancient science,” he said. “But Sanskrit was also a language of daily life, study and drama long before India’s independence.”
“Sanskrit has been neglected for too long. That’s why fewer youngsters studied it,” Modi explained. “Times are changing. Social media has given Sanskrit a new lease of life. You can see young people teaching it, performing it, and even singing it in modern styles.”
