Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed the old Congress-led government’s heavy taxes during his recent visits to Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, while celebrating how the new GST reforms are putting real money back in people’s pockets. Speaking to crowds on September 25, Modi used everyday items like toothpaste, shirts, shoes, and motorcycles to show the big difference—saving families hundreds of rupees each month on essentials.
In Rajasthan, after kicking off development projects worth over Rs 1.22 lakh crore in Banswara, Modi highlighted the wins from the latest GST changes rolled out on September 22. Before 2014, slapping down Rs 100 on basics like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and hair oil meant paying Rs 131 total thanks to a whopping Rs 31 tax. GST in 2017 cut that to Rs 118, and now it’s just Rs 105—a Rs 26 saving per Rs 100. Families spending Rs 1,000 a month on these items could save up to Rs 3,000 a year, Modi said, easing the load on moms and household budgets.
He turned to clothes next, noting a Rs 1,000 shirt used to carry nearly Rs 170 in taxes pre-2014. Under GST, that’s down to Rs 50, and the new reforms drop it to Rs 35. Footwear tells a similar story: A Rs 500 pair of shoes once added Rs 75 in taxes, making it Rs 575. Now, after reforms, it’s Rs 50 cheaper, and shoes up to Rs 2,500 face lower rates too—great news for everyday needs.
Modi didn’t stop at small stuff. He talked about big dreams like owning a motorcycle. A Rs 60,000 bike faced over Rs 19,000 in taxes back in 2014, but GST trimmed that by Rs 2,500, and the latest tweaks bring it to just Rs 10,000—a Rs 9,000 win for buyers. Farmers get a boost too: Tractors that cost Rs 70,000 extra in taxes now save over Rs 40,000, while three-wheelers (key for low-income jobs) are Rs 20,000 cheaper, and scooters or motorcycles run Rs 8,000-9,000 less.
Building homes? Cement bags offer relief as well. A Rs 300 bag once piled on Rs 90 in taxes; now it’s Rs 50, saving Rs 40 compared to the
