PM Modi Inaugurates Mizoram’s First Railway Line, Boosting Northeast Connectivity
In a big boost for Mizoram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off the state’s first-ever railway line on Saturday—the Bairabi-Sairang Rail Link. This new connection links the hilly northeastern state directly to the rest of India, making travel easier and faster for locals.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw joined the event in Aizawl and praised the project as an engineering wonder. Building this rail line in the tough Himalayan terrain wasn’t easy, he said. The team tackled tricky geology by turning sandy soil into rock-solid foundations and even invented new tunneling techniques. The 51-km stretch features 45 tunnels and 45 bridges, including one taller than Delhi’s iconic Qutub Minar.
Vaishnaw credited PM Modi’s Act East Policy for the progress. "Before 2014, the Northeast got just Rs 2,000 crore for railways. Modi ji ramped it up fivefold to Rs 10,000 crore—that’s the real Act East push," he noted. Today, massive railway projects worth Rs 77,000 crore are underway in the region, transforming connectivity.
The Bairabi-Sairang line, costing over Rs 8,070 crore, fulfills Modi’s promise of world-class infrastructure and last-mile links. For Mizoram residents, it means safe, affordable travel options. Plus, it ensures quick delivery of essentials like food grains, fertilizers, and supplies, cutting logistics costs and opening up the region.
On the occasion, PM Modi flagged off three new trains: the Sairang-Aizawl to Delhi Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express, Sairang to Guwahati Express, and Sairang to Kolkata Express. These routes will make journeys to major cities smoother than ever.
Modi didn’t stop at rails—he also laid foundation stones for key road projects, including the Aizawl Bypass Road, Thenzawl-Sialsuk Road, and Khankawn-Rongura Road. These upgrades will further improve travel and trade in Mizoram’s rugged landscapes.
This milestone marks a new chapter for Northeast India, blending modern engineering with Modi’s vision for inclusive growth.
