Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a heartfelt visit to Imphal in Manipur on Saturday, connecting directly with locals amid ongoing efforts to bring peace to the state. This trip marks his first to Manipur since ethnic clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023, shaking the region’s stability.
Before heading to Imphal, PM Modi stopped in Churachandpur, where he addressed people from various ethnic groups. He urged everyone to leave violence behind and focus on building a peaceful future. “A new dawn of hope and confidence is emerging in Manipur,” he said, sharing his optimism after meeting families affected by the conflict in relief camps.
The clashes have hit Manipur hard, damaging its economy, breaking social ties, and creating political unrest. But PM Modi reassured the crowd that the central government stands firmly with the people. “I appeal to all groups to choose peace for their dreams and their children’s future. Today, I promise I’m right by your side,” he declared during a public meeting in Churachandpur.
He also highlighted recent progress, expressing satisfaction over peace agreements with several ethnic groups. “Peace drives development, and in the last 11 years, we’ve resolved many conflicts in the North-East. Talks are underway with hill and valley groups, built on communication, respect, and understanding,” PM Modi added.
To boost Manipur’s growth, the Prime Minister kicked off development projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore in Churachandpur. Key launches include the Rs 3,600 crore Manipur Urban Roads and Drainage Improvement Project for better infrastructure. He also laid foundations for five National Highway projects valued at more than Rs 2,500 crore, the Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project to spur tech growth, and working women’s hostels at nine spots to support families.
During his interactions in Churachandpur, locals warmly welcomed PM Modi with traditional gifts like the Zomie shawl and Thadou Kuki shawl. A young girl even presented him with a touching portrait, making the visit feel personal and hopeful for Manipur’s recovery.
