Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off two big new agriculture programs on Saturday, announcing the PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana and the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses. Together the schemes cost about Rs 35,440 crore.
The launch happened during a special “Krishi” programme at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi. The event also celebrated the birth anniversary of Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan.
PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana
The first scheme is worth Rs 24,000 crore and focuses on boosting crop productivity. It will help farmers adopt crop diversification, use more sustainable farming methods, and improve storage facilities at the village and block levels. The plan also upgrades irrigation and makes long‑term and short‑term credit easier to get in 100 selected districts. The goal is to lift rural incomes and make India more self‑sufficient in food.
Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses
The second scheme, with Rs 11,440 crore, is all about pulses. Farmers will get more land to grow pulses, and the government will improve the whole value chain—from buying and storing to processing. By cutting losses and adding value, the plan aims to raise pulse yields and income.
While unveiling the schemes, Modi spoke directly with farmers at the Krishi programme, underscoring his commitment to farming welfare and rural infrastructure. He highlighted new tools and modern methods that can help farmers grow more and sell better.
Other Projects Launched
Modi also opened several projects:
- Artificial insemination training centres in Bengaluru and Jammu‑Kashmir.
- Centres of excellence in Amreli (Gujarat) and Banas (Uttarakhand).
- An IVF lab under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission in Assam.
- Milk powder plants in Mehsana, Indore and Bhilwara.
- A fish feed plant under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana in Tezpur, Assam.
- Infrastructure for agro‑processing clusters, integrated cold chains and value‑addition.
In addition, he laid foundation stones for newer projects, such as:
- Integrated cold chain and value‑addition infrastructure in Krishna, Andhra Pradesh.
- Trout fisheries in Uttarakhand.
- An integrated aqua park in Nagaland.
- A smart fishing harbour in Karaikal, Puducherry.
- A state‑of‑the‑art aqua park in Hirakud, Odisha.
Milestones Highlighted
The programme highlighted key achievements under the government’s farm initiatives:
- 5 million farmers have joined 10,000 farmer‑producer organisations (FPOs). In 2024‑25, 1,100 of these made over Rs 1 crore in annual turnover.
- 50,000 farmers earned certification under the National Mission for Natural Farming.
- 38,000 MAITRIs (multi‑purpose AI technicians in rural India) were certified.
- More than 10,000 multipurpose and e‑PACS computerised systems were set up.
- Numerous cooperative societies in dairying and fisheries were strengthened and converted into Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samriddhi Kendras (PMKSK) and Common Service Centres (CSC).
These steps are part of India’s larger push toward agricultural self‑reliance, better rural infrastructure, and higher incomes for farmers. Modi’s visit and the new schemes aim to bring fresh investment, modern technology and support closer to the heart of the country’s farming community.
