Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to kick off a major boost for Mizoram’s rail connectivity this weekend. On September 13, he’ll inaugurate the much-awaited Bairabi-Sairang railway project and launch three new train services from Aizawl, linking the Northeast’s hill capital to Delhi, Guwahati, and Kolkata. This exciting development promises to make travel easier for locals and open up new doors for the region.
Indian Railways officials shared the big news on Thursday. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) plans to roll out these trains right after the inauguration at the new Sairang station near Aizawl. "We’re thrilled to connect Mizoram’s capital with key cities across India," said NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma. The Prime Minister will flag off the trains alongside Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and some central ministers.
The three new trains include:
- Sairang-Anand Vihar (Delhi) Rajdhani Express: A weekly service zipping through Badarpur, Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, Malda Town, and Bhagalpur.
- Kolkata-Sairang-Kolkata Express: Running three days a week via Badarpur, Guwahati, Goalpara Town, Golakganj, New Jalpaiguri, and Malda Town.
- Guwahati-Sairang-Guwahati Express: A daily run for quick and convenient local travel.
All three will have their inaugural trips on September 13, with regular services starting soon after. Want the full schedule and stops? Check the IRCTC website or NFR’s social media pages, and double-check before booking your ticket.
This 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line, built at a whopping Rs 8,071 crore, is an engineering wonder. It cuts through tough hilly terrain with 48 tunnels (totaling over 12 km, including a 2-km-long one), 55 major bridges, and 87 minor ones. One standout feature? Bridge No. 196 towers at 114 meters— that’s 42 meters taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar! The project also adds five road overbridges, six underbridges, and four new stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.
Thanks to this line, Aizawl joins Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar as the fourth Northeast capital with rail links. NFR General Manager (Construction) Arun Kumar Chaudhary and his team have been working round-the-clock to wrap up preparations. Union ministers from DoNER, Tribal Affairs, and Road Transport will join the celebrations.
Mizoram CM Lalduhoma reviewed the event plans on September 9. The PM might also speak at a public rally at the Assam Rifles ground in Aizawl, tied to the railway launch. After Mizoram, Modi could head to Manipur’s Imphal and Churachandpur for more addresses, with security teams already on high alert. The PMO hasn’t confirmed the full itinerary yet, but excitement is building across the Northeast.
This new railway connectivity in Mizoram marks a game-changer, bridging remote areas and boosting tourism, trade, and daily life for millions. Stay tuned for updates on Indian Railways’ Northeast expansion!
