Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at the NDTV World Summit on Friday night, warning that India’s struggles had been created long before 2014, when his party won the elections. He blamed the Congress party for policy paralysis, large corruption scandals, and a shaky economy that left many Indians in trouble.
The speech was delivered in New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam, where Modi addressed a mixed crowd that included Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. His headline theme was “Unstoppable India,” comparing his government’s reforms with what he called the “exclusion” of the Congress era.
“During Congress rule, people were shut out of banks. Half the population had no bank accounts,” Modi said. He cited the creation of over 50 crore (500 million) Jan Dhan accounts as proof that today Indians can open accounts with a simple mobile number and access digital payments. “We made financial services part of everyday life, not a privilege for a few,” he added.
He also criticised Congress’s handling of the non‑performing asset (NPA) crisis, describing the backlog as a “mountain” that hurt the banking system. Modi said his administration lifted the NPA problem on the books and introduced reforms that made India a leader in digital transactions worldwide.
Modi accused Congress of wanting to shut down petrol pumps for 12 hours overnight to avoid paying subsidies. “Under my government, petrol stations run 24‑hour, so commuters aren’t penalised,” he said, contrasting that with past subsidy policies that created confusion among citizens.
When asked about India’s economic progress, he highlighted that inflation is below 2 percent and the country’s average growth over the past three years is about 7.8 percent, an achievement praised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He added that India has moved from being one of the “fragile five” economies to a top‑five global economy.
Modi also mentioned recent foreign investments, noting that Google has announced a large new investment in India and that growing sectors include energy and semiconductors. “The world sees opportunity in India and trusts us as a responsible partner,” he said.
The NDTV summit, titled “Edge of the Unknown: Risk, Resolve, Renewal,” aimed to spark global discussion on India’s future. Modi’s address reinforced the message that his leadership has turned risk into reform, reform into resilience, and resilience into success. The Prime Minister concluded that India’s next journey will be stronger, more inclusive, and ready for new challenges.
