In New Delhi on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at the NDTV World Summit, where he openly blamed India’s previous Congress government for a lot of the country’s problems. He said the Congress era created policy paralysis, a flood of scams, and bad economic management that left India weak.
The summit’s theme was “Unstoppable India.” Modi talked to an international audience that included Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. He positioned his own record of reforms against what he called the “exclusionary” Congress legacy.
“Congress kept people away from banks. Poor people were scared even to step inside,” Modi said. He added that when his government took over, half of the population didn’t have bank accounts. India’s response was to open more than 50 million Jan Dhan accounts, making the nation a world leader in digital banking and financial inclusion.
Modi highlighted banking reforms that tackled the huge pile of non‑performing assets (NPAs) left behind by Congress. “Unlike the old regime, we democratised policies instead of governmentising them,” he said, calling his approach the engine behind “Unstoppable Bharat.”
He fired the Deputy prime minister’s speech about Congress’s subsidy plans, noting their proposal to shut petrol pumps for 12 hours a day to skip subsidies. Modi countered that his government keeps pumps open around the clock, stressing public welfare.
On economic growth, Modi pointed to the IMF’s recent upward revision of India’s growth forecasts. “Inflation is now below 2 percent and our average growth over the last three years is 7.8 percent – an unprecedented achievement,” he said. He reminded listeners that India has risen from the “fragile five” to a top‑five global economy.
Modi also praised the strong interest from global investors. He cited Google’s latest big investment in India and the growing attention to the country’s energy and semiconductor sectors. “The world sees opportunity in India. It views us as a responsible partner,” he said.
With an opening that framed India’s journey as turning risks into reforms, reforms into resilience, and resilience into outcomes, Modi’s speech reinforced the message that his government’s policies are proactive and people‑centric. The NDTV World Summit, themed “Edge of the Unknown: Risk, Resolve, Renewal,” became the stage for Modi’s confirmation that India’s ascent is powered by decisive governance and inclusive growth.
