PM Modi’s Northeast Tour: Boosting Rail Links, Healthcare, and Culture
Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicks off a packed two-day visit to Assam, Manipur, and Mizoram starting Saturday. This trip focuses on launching big development projects to connect and uplift the Northeast region.
He lands first in Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital, to kickstart the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway project. This makes Aizawl the fourth Northeast capital with rail connectivity, joining Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar. It’s a game-changer for travel and trade in the hilly state.
Joining PM Modi are key central ministers. He’ll flag off three new train services linking Aizawl to major cities: the weekly Sairang-Anand Vihar (Delhi) Rajdhani Express, the tri-weekly Kolkata-Sairang-Kolkata Express, and the daily Guwahati-Sairang-Guwahati Express. Expect lively public rallies where he’ll share updates on Northeast growth.
Next stop: Manipur, PM Modi’s first visit since the ethnic clashes erupted in May 2023. He’ll speak at gatherings in Churachandpur and Imphal, unveiling projects worth Rs 8,500 crore. From Peace Ground in Churachandpur—a Kuki-Zo tribal hub—he’ll lay foundation stones for initiatives totaling Rs 7,300 crore. Then, at Imphal’s historic Kangla Fort, he’ll launch infrastructure boosts worth Rs 1,200 crore.
In both spots, PM Modi plans chats with local MLAs, leaders, and civil society groups to hear ground realities. Manipur’s under President’s Rule since February, after ex-Chief Minister N. Biren Singh stepped down. The state’s assembly stays suspended until 2027 amid ongoing Meitei-Kuki-Zo tensions.
Ahead of the visit, Army’s Spear Corps chief, Lieutenant General Abhijit S. Pendharkar, toured Churachandpur and border areas. He checked security along the India-Myanmar frontier and force readiness, as a defence spokesperson confirmed.
Wrapping up in Guwahati, Assam, the visit celebrates the birth centenary of legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika, a Bharat Ratna awardee. PM Modi launches the official events on September 13.
On Sunday, he rolls out projects exceeding Rs 19,000 crore across Assam. In Darrang district, he’ll start work on Darrang Medical College, plus nursing and GNM schools, with a Rs 567 crore investment to strengthen healthcare.
Big infrastructure wins include the Narengi-Kuruwa bridge and Guwahati Ring Road project, linking Kamrup, Darrang in Assam, and Ri Bhoi in Meghalaya. These cost around Rs 7,000 crore and promise smoother connectivity.
Later, PM Modi heads to Numaligarh refinery in Golaghat district. He’ll inaugurate a Rs 5,000 crore bamboo-based ethanol plant and lay the foundation for a Rs 7,000 crore Petro Fluidised Catalytic Cracker Unit. These steps push green energy and industrial growth in the Northeast.
This tour highlights PM Modi’s push for balanced development in India’s Northeast, from rail networks to cultural tributes. Stay tuned for live updates on these transformative projects.
