In Guwahati, the state’s chief player, Himanta Biswa Sarma, told the crowd that the long‑awaited link across the Brahmaputra – the Guwahati‑North Guwahati bridge – will open to the public in January 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will cut the ribbon and officially hand the project to visitors.
Sarma spoke at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra and highlighted a wave of high‑profile visits that Assam is set to host. He said Modi will be in the state twice this year. In December, the PM will kick‑start the new terminal at Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gandhi Bhavan International (LGBI) Airport and lay the foundation for the Namrup fertiliser plant. By January, he’ll come back to celebrate the bridge’s opening and also attend a special event at IIM Guwahati.
“Exact dates are still being finalized,” Sarma added, but the calendar looks ready to draw major ministers to Assam.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to visit around the end of December or early January. He will open the Jyoti‑Bishnu Auditorium, launch the Batadrava project, and take part in a booth‑samman (announcement) session. Earlier, on November 8, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will travel to the state. Her first stop will be the semiconductor unit in Jagiroad, where she will meet about 300 young entrepreneurs. Later that day, she’ll open the new river terminal at Gurukhand and the Brahmaputra Riverfront at Uzan Bazar. She’ll also lay the foundation stone for the new Swaheed Konkolata University in Gohpur, a Rs 500‑crore campus built on 771 bighas of land. “The tender is done; construction kicks off soon,” Sarma said.
On November 9, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Guwahati to watch the first-ever aircraft display in Assam at Lachit Ghat. The show will feature Rafale and Sukhoi fighter jets, a major aviation event for the region.
Sarma also shared that he has attended 9 of his 12 planned meetings in Bihar and will soon return to finish the rest of his schedule.
All these visits underline Assam’s growing importance on the national stage and promise a burst of new infrastructure and investment for the state.
