Prime Minister Narendra Modi plans to kick off the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana on September 26 at 11 a.m. through a video conference. This launch comes right before the Bihar Assembly elections, as government officials announced on Thursday.
In a big boost for women in Bihar, Modi will directly send Rs 10,000 to the bank accounts of 75 lakh women. That adds up to Rs 7,500 crore in the first phase alone. The program, first announced by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, focuses on helping women become self-reliant through self-employment and new livelihood options.
The scheme opens doors for one woman per family across Bihar, no matter their background. Each eligible woman gets that initial Rs 10,000 grant to start her chosen income-generating activity, like a small business or craft work.
Six months later, officials will check on progress and could provide up to Rs 2 lakh more in support. To make it work, community resource persons from self-help groups will train these women on skills and business basics. Plus, local rural markets—known as gramin haat-bazaars—will get upgrades to help sell products easily.
Bihar leaders approved the initiative back on August 29, 2025, during a cabinet meeting led by Nitish Kumar at his secretariat. They gave it the go-ahead to empower women with financial aid and job opportunities.
Many see this as a smart move to uplift women voters and boost rural economies in Bihar. It comes at a tense time politically, with Nitish Kumar’s NDA coalition battling the Grand Alliance (INDIA bloc) in the upcoming high-stakes polls.
