In Chennai, the ongoing family feud inside the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) party has escalated after India’s Election Commission officially named Anbumani Ramadoss as its president. Now, party founder Dr. S. Ramadoss, Anbumani’s father, is reportedly trying to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to talk things over.
The tension between the father and son has been building for months in PMK politics. Both held their own general council meetings, each insisting they lead the party. On August 9, Anbumani’s group met and passed a resolution making him president. The Election Commission reviewed documents from August 10 and 11, then sent a letter confirming his role.
Dr. Ramadoss’s supporters aren’t backing down. On September 17, key members like Murali Shankar, MLA Arul, and Swaminathan met the Chief Election Commissioner. They asked the panel to reverse the decision and recognize the party headquarters at Thailapuram, Dr. Ramadoss’s home, instead of the address from Anbumani’s side.
Still, Anbumani has strong support in the PMK internal conflict. He counts on three of the five party MLAs, General Secretary Vadivel Ravanan, Treasurer Thilagavathi Bama, most district secretaries, and more than 90 percent of general council members. The Election Commission said its choice came from this clear majority.
With the decision standing, Dr. Ramadoss’s team plans to fight it in court. Close advisers are pushing him to reach out to PM Modi directly. They note that while the BJP openly supports Anbumani in Tamil Nadu politics, Modi has long respected Dr. Ramadoss personally after several past meetings.
“The BJP backs Anbumani, but the Prime Minister has always admired Dr. Ramadoss,” said one executive from the founder’s camp. “A meeting with Modi could help balance things and calm the party rift. That’s why he’s seeking time with the PM.”
As this legal and political battle in the PMK continues, the divide threatens to hurt the party before key state elections in Tamil Nadu.
