In Bengaluru, the Karnataka High Court has put a pause on a high‑profile case involving former chief minister B. S. Yediyurappa and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court reserved its decision on a petition that seeks to stop the criminal proceedings against Yediyurappa.
Yediyurappa, a senior BJP leader, asked the High Court to cancel the order that set the case in motion and the summons issued to him on Feb. 28, 2025. He also wants the police report (FIR) and the chargesheet to be struck down.
The case began when the trial court first opened the investigation on Feb. 2, 2024, after a complaint was filed on Mar. 14, 2024. The complaint says that Yediyurappa and three other men sexually harassed a 17‑year‑old girl outside his house. According to the charge sheet, Yediyurappa took the girl to a room, locked it, and harassed her, but the girl resisted and escaped. The complainant later posted photos and videos on social media; the accused allegedly tried to hide the evidence and gave the victim 2 lakh rupees.
Yediyurappa denies the allegations, saying he was there to help a mother and daughter in distress. He claims they approached him for help with a sexual assault case against the daughter and that he called the police to assist. He says once they left, the accusations started and he faced unwanted scrutiny. Yediyurappa said he was willing to face the charges and that he had even given money to the family when asked.
The High Court’s single‑bench, presided over by Justice M. I. Arun, had earlier reversed a trial court decision and sent the matter back for further investigation. The court’s lawyers argue different views: Yediyurappa’s counsel says the earlier order was quashed because the trial court didn’t apply its mind; the prosecutor says it did.
The case is still under review. The High Court’s final ruling will decide whether the prosecution can proceed against Yediyurappa, the other three accused and any other involved parties.
