Kanpur townspeople were shaken when a loud blast struck the busy Mishri Bazar market on Wednesday night. The explosion tore through a scooter and crumpled several nearby shops, injuring six people, including a woman who remains in critical condition.
Police say the blast was caused by illegal firecrackers that had been sold in the street market. Joint Police Commissioner Ashutosh Kumar explained that the police first thought a bomb might have been planted in a scooter, but CCTV footage and on‑site witnesses showed bright fireworks in a hidden stall. Forensic tests confirmed the shock came from a low‑intensity explosive typical of firecrackers.
After the blast, the police conducted raids across the market and detained shopkeepers who were selling fireworks illegally. They also detained about half a dozen people who were standing near the scooter when the explosion occurred and had fled when authorities arrived. The detained suspects say they were simply bystanders, but their quick exit turns them into suspects in the investigation.
The woman who suffered severe burns is still in the intensive‑care unit of a local hospital, while the other five victims are being treated in nearby hospitals. Medical teams are monitoring all patients closely as they recover.
Police officials are still examining debris and the damaged scooters for any other possible explosives, but so far evidence points only to illegal fireworks. The incident has raised concerns about safety ahead of the upcoming festival season, when Mishri Bazar normally sees a surge of shoppers buying toys and decorative goods.
The investigation continues. The police have urged anyone with information about illegal firecracker sales in the area to come forward. It serves as a stark reminder that the sale of firecrackers without proper regulation can endanger entire communities.
