Authorities in Rajasthan quickly removed posters and hoardings showing alleged obscene images of former MLA Mewaram Jain from walls across Barmer, Baytu, and Balotra on Saturday. The move came amid growing political tension, just days after Jain rejoined the Congress party.
The scandalous posters accused the Congress of protecting rapists and carried messages like: “Barmer is shamed. Barmer’s Congress will not tolerate the disrespect of women. We do not accept rapists.” They falsely claimed to be from the District Congress Committees of Barmer, Jaisalmer, and Balotra.
Congress leaders wasted no time distancing the party from the controversy. In a joint statement, the district units of Barmer, Jaisalmer, and Balotra denied any role in putting up the posters. “These objectionable materials came from unknown people trying to tarnish the party’s image,” the statement said. The party vowed to pursue strict legal action against anyone misusing its name.
Municipal Commissioner Surendra Singh Rajawat confirmed the swift removal and added that officials would take legal steps against those responsible for installing the hoardings.
Mewaram Jain hit back hard, calling the posters a low blow from his rivals. “The court already cleared my name, but my opponents stooped to this level of depravity,” he said. Jain’s lawyer, Sultan Singh, echoed that view, saying the posters aimed to smear both Jain and the Congress. They have already filed a police complaint, and Jain accused anti-social elements of twisting his photos and the party’s branding. He called for action not just against the culprits but also printing press owners and hoarding contractors involved.
This drama unfolds against Jain’s rocky history with Congress. Back in January 2024, the party expelled him after a gang-rape case surfaced in Jodhpur, involving charges under the POCSO Act for crimes against children. An obscene video of him also went viral online at the time. Jain stayed out for nearly 20 months until the Congress disciplinary committee approved his reinstatement on September 22.
Before that, Jain met with Congress in-charge Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa in Delhi to seal his comeback. As investigations continue, the incident highlights ongoing rivalries in Rajasthan’s political scene.
