Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah took a hands-on approach to Bengaluru’s notorious road woes on Saturday. After driving around the city to check out the bumpy streets and endless potholes, he slammed officials for shoddy work and set a strict one-month deadline to fix everything up and make the roads safe for drivers.
Speaking to reporters, Siddaramaiah said he’s ordered teams to fill every pothole in Bengaluru with top-quality materials. He even suspended an executive engineer on the spot for botched repairs—turns out, workers had just dumped loose gravel, known as jelly, into holes without proper tar sealing, leading to quick breakdowns.
On Hennur Road, white-topping work is in progress, and Siddaramaiah made it clear the contractor bears full responsibility for keeping it smooth. The state government is pouring Rs 13 crore per kilometer into a 5-km stretch, so he expects results fast. “No more potholes after this,” he insisted, giving crews just 30 days to deliver.
Siddaramaiah admitted the inspections are sparking quick fixes, but he didn’t shy away from the dangers: these Bengaluru potholes are causing accidents left and right. He pointed fingers at the previous BJP government, saying better maintenance back then could have prevented the mess. Still, he promised full repairs before the rainy season ends to keep Bengaluru’s traffic flowing safely.
Shifting gears to another hot topic, the CM addressed BJP MP Tejasvi Surya’s call for people to skip Karnataka’s caste census survey. A petition is challenging it in court, Siddaramaiah noted, so the survey will move forward only as the judges direct. He highlighted that about 10 lakh residents have already taken part, showing strong community buy-in.
Waste management in Bengaluru also drew his ire. He spotted unmanaged garbage piling up along roadsides and ordered immediate cleanup. “If commissioners and engineers don’t act, they’ll face consequences,” he warned, pushing for cleaner streets across the city.
