India’s government has just announced two key leadership changes in its top paramilitary forces, boosting security along borders and critical sites. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved these moves for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), as current chiefs gear up for retirement by the end of September.
First up, Praveen Kumar, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the West Bengal cadre, steps in as the new Director General of ITBP. Right now, he’s working as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau. He’ll replace Rahul Rasgotra, a 1989-batch IPS officer from Manipur, who retires on September 30. Kumar’s term runs until his own retirement on September 30, 2030, or until the government says otherwise.
With his sharp skills in intelligence and strategy, Kumar brings loads of experience to the table. ITBP guards India’s tough Himalayan borders, and he’s set to ramp up efforts in border management and fighting insurgency in these high-altitude zones.
In a similar shift, Praveer Ranjan, another 1993-batch IPS officer from the AGMUT cadre, gets promoted to Director General of CISF. He’s already Special Director General there and will take over from Rajwinder Singh Bhatti, a 1990-batch officer from Bihar, also retiring on September 30. Ranjan’s stint lasts until July 31, 2029, or further notice.
Ranjan knows industrial security and public safety inside out. Under his watch, CISF will keep strengthening protection for vital infrastructure like airports, factories, and major assets across India.
These picks show the government’s push for smooth handovers and top-notch performance in ITBP and CISF. The orders came from Sakshi Mittal, a Director in the Appointments Committee under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.
As these experienced leaders take charge, both forces look ready for fresh strategies to tackle India’s security challenges head-on.
