New Delhi – Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar sent warm wishes to the people of the state and the nation on the first day of Chhath Puja. The four‑day Hindu festival, which honors the Sun god Bhaskar, is a major celebration of faith and community.
On the social media platform X, Nitish wrote, “Greetings to all Bihar citizens and the country on Chhath. This festival of self‑discipline invites us to offer prayers to the setting and rising Sun with pure hearts. I pray for progress, happiness and peace for the state.”
Union Food‑Processing Minister and Lok Jan Shakti Party chief Chirag Paswan also used X, saying, “Heartiest greetings on ‘Nahay‑Khaay’, the first day of Chhath. May Chhathi Maiya bless everyone with happiness and prosperity.”
Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary, Vijay Kumar Sinha and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal joined the wave of messages. Samrat called the day “Nahay‑Khaay,” wishing healthy, prosperous lives, while Vijay highlighted the nature‑worshiping aspect of the festival. Kejriwal’s post praised devotees’ devotion and asked the Sun gods to shower blessings.
Participants, called “Vratis,” begin the festival by bathing in rivers or ponds. They then break a long fast with a simple meal of plain rice (arwa chawal) and bottle‑gourd curry (lauki ki sabzi) before sharing trimmings – such as chana dal, amla chutney and papad – as prasad.
Chhath Puja, rooted in ancient Satyuga and Dwapara Yuga, is one of the oldest Sun‑worship traditions. Devotees fast, avoid food and water, and perform rituals to seek prosperity, health, and peace, believing that worship of Surya dispels negativity.
The day’s greetings from leaders and the vibrant rituals underline Chhath’s continued significance in Bihar and across India.
