President Droupadi Murmu will visit Kerala’s famous Sabarimala temple on October 22, the Travancore Devasom Board said on Monday. The 83‑year‑old President will be the second holder of India’s highest office to perform the temple rituals.
The President will arrive in the state capital on October 21. On the next day she will take a helicopter to Nilackal and then travel by road to Pamba, the foothill town where the temple begins. From there she will complete the regular rites at the Ganapathy temple before heading up to the hilltop shrine. Security and protocol details are being handled by the National Security Guard (NSG).
By 5 p.m. she will finish the darshan and return. The Sabarimala temple will stay open to devotees on both October 21 and 22.
Murmu’s trip was originally scheduled for May but was cancelled after the Operation Sindhūr security drill. The temple sits 3,000 feet above sea level on the Western Ghats and a four‑kilometre trek from Pamba is required to reach the shrine. Women aged 10‑50 are not allowed inside the hilltop sanctuary, and the temple can only be accessed on foot from the Pamba River.
Her visit comes amid a high‑court‑appointed special investigation team probing the alleged theft of gold plates covering the sanctum’s entrance. One suspect has been arrested, and nine more names have surfaced in the two FIRs filed by the investigative team.
