Kottayam, Kerala – President Droupadi Murmu praised St. Thomas College, Palai, on its 75th anniversary, calling the school a “workshop where destinies are shaped.”
Speaking at the platinum‑jubilee ceremony, she highlighted the college’s long‑standing focus on holistic learning, sustainability and inclusivity.
“Here, intellectual pursuits are guided by a moral compass,” the President said. “The college’s emblem—Latin words meaning Life, Light, Love—reflects universal values that promote the sanctity of life, the light of wisdom, and love for humanity.”
Murmu reminded everyone of Kerala’s rich educational tradition. She recalled the social reforms that began in Kottayam, such as the Vaikom Satyagraha, and honoured literacy pioneers like P.N. Panicker, whose “Vayichu Valaruga” (Read and Grow) campaign sparked Kerala’s library movement.
“The power of literacy and knowledge has made Kerala a leader in human development,” she observed.
Students were urged to draw inspiration from the region’s legacy—from India’s early printing presses in Kottayam to the achievements of St. Thomas College alumni. Among them are former Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan and volleyball legend Jimmy George.
Murmu also referenced her recent visit to Thiruvananthapuram, where she unveiled a bust of former President K.R. Narayanan, a figure whose life exemplified “the democratic spirit of India” and the transformative power of education.
“The college sits beside the Meenachil River and has been a beacon for students from rural areas,” she added. “As India progresses toward Viksit Bharat 2047, I am confident this institution will continue lighting the way to a just and enlightened society.”
President Murmu has been in Kerala for three days. After spending Thursday at the popular Kumarakom tourist spot, she will return to Delhi on Friday.
