On Saturday, President Droupadi Murmu walked the lawns of Gujarat Vidyapith, the university founded by Mahatma Gandhi, to greet students and faculty at the 71st convocation. The ceremony was a reminder of Gujarat’s role in India’s freedom movement and of Gandhi’s vision for self‑reliance and community service.

Speaking to the crowd, the president called the campus a “sacred site of the ideals of our freedom struggle.” She urged graduates to follow Gandhi’s example of active participation in national campaigns and to help spread Gujarat’s culture of entrepreneurship and self‑employment across the country.

The president also highlighted the social responsibility of every student. She said that the knowledge gained at university must be linked with local needs to make a real difference in people’s lives. “By serving society, you repay the debt that society owes you,” she told the graduates.

After the convocation, Droupadi Murmu visited several important sites in the state. She offered prayers at the Dwarkadhish Temple and then toured Gir National Park, home to the majestic Asiatic lion and a variety of wildlife. During her visit, she met with local tribal communities and praised their nature‑friendly way of life—a model she believes can inspire sustainable progress throughout the country.

The president’s visit underscored her focus on balancing growth with tradition, encouraging both the next generation of students and the wider community to build a brighter, more self‑sufficient future.
