President Droupadi Murmu unveiled a new bust of former President K.R. Narayanan at Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. She called Narayanan a lifelong inspiration and praised his focus on education as a key to human growth.
During the ceremony, Murmu welcomed staff from the K.R. Narayanan Foundation. “He remained close to his roots and always spoke about the power of learning,” she told the crowd. The former president’s life covered many roles – he was an ambassador, a university vice‑chancellor, a Member of Parliament, a Union minister, the country’s Vice‑President and then President from 1997 to 2002.
“We see him as a true son of Kerala and a national icon,” Murmu said. The foundation’s representatives submitted a request for a commemorative postage stamp and coin to honor Narayanan. The president said she would forward the proposal to the appropriate ministries for review.
At the event, K.R. Narayanan Foundation chair A.B.J. Jose presented Murmu with the biographical book K.R. Narayanan: Bharatathinte Sooryathejas and the documentary Uzhavoorinte Puthran, both celebrating the former leader’s legacy.
Narayanan began his career in the Indian Foreign Service during N. D. Tata’s tenure and went on to serve as ambassador to the United States and China, earning Nehru’s praise as “the best diplomat.” He later entered politics at Indira Gandhi’s invitation, winning three consecutive Lok Sabha elections from Kerala and serving as Minister of State in Rajiv Gandhi’s cabinet.
The bust and the events at Raj Bhavan underscore Narayanan’s lasting impact on India’s political and diplomatic history.
