A deadly landslide on Tuesday buried a private bus in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, killing 18 passengers and injuring others. The bus, carrying about 35 people from Marotan to Ghumarwin, was hit by a rockslide in the Bhalughat area of the Jhandutta Assembly segment. Rain had been falling in the region since Monday, making the mountains unstable.
The government and leaders have reacted quickly. President Droupadi Murmu posted on X that the tragedy is “extremely painful” and offered prayers for the families and for the injured. “I pray for a speedy recovery for the wounded,” she added. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also sent his condolences to those who lost loved ones. He announced that the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund will give ₹200,000 to the families of each dead passenger and ₹50,000 to the injured. Home Minister Amit Shah said the NDRF teams are on the scene, conducting rescue operations and lifting the wreckage. He expressed sorrow and prayers for the victims’ families and the wounded.
State officials are working hard to clear debris and find any missing passengers. So far, 18 bodies have been recovered from the wreckage. Eyewitnesses reported that the rockfall crushed the bus, leaving little chance for survival. The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Sukhu, also expressed his grief and sent condolences to the bereaved families.
The incident highlights the danger of landslides in the mountainous regions of Himachal Pradesh, especially after heavy rainfall. Rescue crews continue to search the area for survivors, while the government plans compensation for the victims’ families and support for the injured.
