In Bhopal, a high-level committee led by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav met on Monday to tackle appointments for the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC). The group discussed picking a new chairperson and two members, but they only greenlit one name due to disagreements on the rest.
Joining Yadav at his official residence were Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, plus other committee members. Sources say the panel approved Avdesh Pratap Singh, the Principal Secretary of the Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, as one MPHRC member. He’s set to retire from his current role by September 30, so this move keeps things moving.
The committee hit a snag on the chairperson spot and the second member, putting those decisions on hold for now. Singhar, a Congress MLA, spoke out after the meeting, pushing back on what he called a lack of transparency in the selection process. “The Human Rights Commission is like a temple of justice, rooted in our Constitution,” he told reporters. “When the government or other bodies fall short on delivering justice, people turn to it as their last hope. That’s why I insisted no ineligible person should get appointed.”
This comes right after the tenure of MPHRC Acting Chairperson Rajiv Tandon wrapped up last Friday. The commission already faces a big backlog, with more than 4,500 complaints waiting for attention. For context, after former Chairman Manohar Mamtani’s term ended, Tandon stepped in as acting head, but now the full leadership team needs filling to keep the MPHRC running smoothly on human rights issues in Madhya Pradesh.
