Private professional colleges in Telangana are gearing up for an indefinite strike that will start on November 3, demanding the state government clear Rs 900 crore in unpaid fee reimbursements. The Federation of Associations of Telangana Higher Education (FATHI) has issued formal strike notices to Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, insisting that the arrears be paid by November 1 or the colleges will shut down.
Earlier this month, FATHI had set a deadline of October 12 for the release of the arrears and warned of a strike from October 13. College administrators, including those from engineering, pharma, nursing, MBA, MCA and B.Ed programs, had already begun an indefinite walk‑out on September 15. The strike was called off that same day after the government promised a Rs 600‑crore payment on September 21‑22, but only Rs 200 crore was actually released.
FATHI also cited an earlier guarantee that the full Rs 1,200 crore owed would be cleared by Diwali. The federation has made it clear that further discussions on the arrears must occur only through the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO). If talks fail, the group plans to join students in a “Chalo Hyderabad” protest.
In total, the colleges claim that fee reimbursement arrears of roughly Rs 10 000 crore remain outstanding. They seek the immediate release of Rs 1,200 crore tied to already‑issued tokens.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar has weighed in, accusing the Telangana government of jeopardising students’ futures by withholding the payments. He warned that the BJP would support the colleges and urged them to proceed with their strike.
As the deadline approaches, all eyes remain on Hyderabad’s private higher‑education sector and the Telangana government’s willingness to resolve the arrears. The outcome will affect thousands of students and college staff across the state.
