In Wayanad, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra didn’t hold back as she criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s delayed visit to violence-hit Manipur. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, she called the two-year wait “very unfortunate” and said the Prime Minister should have gone there much earlier to support the people suffering from ethnic clashes.
Priyanka, who arrived in her Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency on Friday, plans to spend the next eight days connecting with locals in every corner of the area. She’s been representing Wayanad since November last year and used the opportunity to highlight what she sees as a major lapse by the Modi government.
“I’m glad he’s finally decided to visit after two years, but he should have done it much sooner,” Priyanka said. She accused the Prime Minister of letting the violence drag on, leading to countless deaths and immense hardship for families. “He’s allowed so much killing and strife to continue before stepping in,” she added.
Priyanka stressed that this delay goes against India’s long-standing tradition of leaders stepping up during crises, no matter their political side. “Since Independence, Prime Ministers have always reached out to troubled areas right away. He should have thought of it before,” she remarked.
The Congress party has repeatedly slammed the BJP-led government over its handling of the Manipur ethnic violence, which erupted two years ago. Opposition leaders point to the plight of thousands displaced into relief camps and the failure to restore peace in the northeastern state.
Priyanka’s strong words come as the Congress ramps up its attack on the Centre ahead of key elections. Her comments are sure to fuel demands for better accountability on the Manipur crisis, keeping the spotlight on the government’s response to the ongoing turmoil.
