Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has promised strong action against illegal immigration along the state’s sensitive borders. Speaking in the Assembly on Wednesday, he highlighted how his government is stepping up efforts to secure these areas and prevent infiltrations.
Sangma explained that the team regularly meets with top security forces like the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB). These talks aim to boost coordination and keep a sharp eye on any illegal entry attempts. “We’ve told Deputy Commissioners in border districts to team up closely with local villages and offer full support to stop illegal immigration,” he told the House.
The Chief Minister emphasized involving communities as a key part of the plan to handle the state’s long and porous borders. To make things tighter, they’ve added more personnel at checkpoints. Both state police and BSF now check highways and risky routes more rigorously. “This has already led to catching several suspects,” Sangma pointed out.
He pushed back against claims that the government is taking it easy. Instead, he said state and central agencies are working hand-in-hand to avoid any trouble. “We’re not just sitting back—we’re taking real steps to protect our borders,” he added firmly.
Sangma also revealed that the issue has gone all the way up to the Union Government for high-level discussions, showing how seriously Meghalaya is treating illegal immigration concerns. While he couldn’t share every detail of security operations for safety reasons, he assured everyone that the government is fully dedicated to protecting the state’s borders and keeping peace in these areas.
Illegal immigration remains a hot topic in Meghalaya, especially in districts next to Bangladesh. Local groups and political parties often raise alarms about security risks and changes in population due to these border issues.
