Big Boost for Mizoram: PM Modi to Launch State’s First Rail Link Tomorrow
Aizawl, Mizoram – Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared exciting details about the tough engineering hurdles the team cleared to build the Bairabi-Sairang railway line. This game-changing project will finally connect Mizoram to India’s vast rail network, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will kick things off with its inauguration on Saturday morning.
Vaishnaw called the Bairabi-Sairang rail line a key step in linking the hilly northeastern state with the rest of the country. "It’s a huge moment of pride that PM Modi will inaugurate Mizoram’s railway connectivity tomorrow," he said on Friday. Engineers faced massive challenges from the region’s loose sand and tricky Himalayan terrain, but they nailed it with smart innovations.
To handle the unstable sand, the team developed a fresh tunnelling technique that turns the loose soil into a solid, rock-like base before building. "This project threw up completely new challenges due to the complex geology," Vaishnaw explained. The 51-km stretch features a whopping 45 tunnels and 45 bridges – one bridge even stands taller than Delhi’s iconic Qutub Minar!
The Bairabi-Sairang new rail line, costing over Rs 8,070 crore, promises world-class infrastructure and last-mile connectivity, just as PM Modi envisioned. It will make travel safer, faster, and cheaper for Mizoram’s people. Plus, it ensures quick delivery of essentials like food grains, fertilisers, and other goods, boosting logistics and opening up the region like never before.
Freight services on the Mizoram railway line will start right away on Sunday, followed by passenger trains. Vaishnaw announced three key services: the Rajdhani Express from Sairang (near Aizawl) to Delhi’s Anand Vihar Terminal, a connection to the Kolkata Tri-Weekly Express, and a daily Mizoram Express to Guwahati. "We’ll ramp up more trains over time," he added.
During the event, PM Modi will flag off these express trains, including the Sairang-Delhi Rajdhani Express, Sairang-Guwahati Express, and Sairang-Kolkata Express. That’s not all – he’ll also lay the foundation stones for major road projects like the Aizawl Bypass Road, Thenzawl-Sialsuk Road, and Khankawn-Rongura Road to improve connectivity even further.
This visit is part of PM Modi’s five-day tour across Mizoram, Manipur, Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar from September 13 to 15. He’ll launch and start projects worth a massive Rs 71,850 crore, bringing development to the Northeast and beyond. Mizoram’s first railway connectivity is set to transform lives – watch out for smoother journeys and stronger ties with the nation!
