In Ranchi’s Sithio Basti area under Dhurwa police station, the mood on Tuesday was tense. Local residents boiled over with anger after the murder of a 22‑year‑old man named Arshad Ansari. The victim’s family, along with hundreds of residents, staged a prolonged protest outside the police station, demanding that those responsible be hauled in immediately.
Many protestors claimed that, despite repeated warnings about a surge in criminal activity and the growing influence of a land‑mafia in Sithio Basti, the police had taken no concrete preventative measures. “There is no regular patrolling here,” one resident explained, “We kept informing the police, but nothing changed.”
Arshad was killed late on Monday night when two motorcycle‑riding assailants shot at him from close range, striking him in the head. Family friends rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Police were on the scene shortly after and began an inquiry. The Dhurwa station officer noted that one suspect, identified as Tausif, was arrested within 12 hours of the shooting, and further raids are underway to catch the remaining culprits.
Mohammad Jilani, Arshad’s brother, said that Ibrar and Sanjay Kohra were involved in the land business. He suggested that the attackers might have been aiming at someone else, and that Arshad was a victim of mistaken identity. Jilani also stressed that Arshad worked as a painter and had no ties to any land dispute, alleging that local men named Ibrar, Sanjay Kohra and Tausif had plotted to kill his brother.
The victim’s family insists on the immediate arrest of all suspects. Police assure the public that a thorough investigation is in progress and that those involved will be brought to justice soon. Heavy police presence has been maintained in the area as tension remains after the incident.
