Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, joined by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, urged Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday for major help from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). The leaders want quick aid for farmers hit hard by floods and heavy rains across the state.

Fadnavis, along with deputies Shinde and Ajit Pawar, signed the memorandum asking for top-level support. This funding would cover crop losses, damaged farmland, family livelihoods, wrecked homes, and other property destruction. “We need the maximum relief from NDRF to give proper help to farmers and rebuild their lives,” Fadnavis said. His team plans to send a full proposal to the central government soon for flood-hit agricultural land.

The chief minister voiced serious worries about the heavy rains and floods ravaging Maharashtra. More than 31 districts have suffered nonstop downpours, leading to huge crop damage over vast areas. This has crushed the farming community, affecting lakhs of families. “Unprecedented harm has struck agricultural land and farmers’ incomes,” Fadnavis noted in the memo.

The state has already tapped its State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to release Rs 2,215 crore for urgent farmer relief from crop losses. But challenges persist—intense rains could drag on until the late Kharif season in September 2025. So far, floods have damaged over 50 lakh hectares of farmland, and more losses loom.

Just a day earlier, Fadnavis visited flood-stricken villages in the Marathwada region. He promised farmers the state stands strong with them. “We’ll give aid to all affected farmers, no matter the rules, and deliver it before Diwali,” he assured. In spots hammered by cloudburst-like rains, rivers have overflowed, wiping out crops and fertile soil.

To fight future floods, Fadnavis outlined key steps: building protective walls, upgrading old barrages with modern gates, and creating new ones to handle sudden water surges. For hard-to-reach areas, the government will use drone surveys and mobile phone photos to assess damage quickly, speeding up relief for Maharashtra flood victims.
