Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann brought good news for rural communities on Friday, kicking off a massive project to fix and modernize nearly 20,000 kilometers of rural link roads. With a budget of Rs 4,150.42 crore, this initiative promises better connectivity and smoother travels for villagers across the state.
Speaking at an event in Tarn Taran, Mann called it a “historic day” for Punjab’s countryside. He explained that the project targets 7,373 key link roads totaling 19,491.56 km. For the first time, contractors won’t just repair the roads—they’ll handle maintenance for the next five years too. That builds in long-term reliability for these vital routes.
Punjab boasts over 30,000 link roads stretching 64,878 km in total. About 33,492 km fall under the Punjab Mandi Board, while 31,386 km are managed by the Public Works Department. Mann’s government is focusing on the most needy stretches first, spending Rs 3,424.67 crore on repairs and upgrades, plus Rs 725.75 crore to keep them in top shape.
Transparency is a big priority here. The team wrapped up e-tendering for the work, ensuring everything runs corruption-free. They even used artificial intelligence for a smart survey of the roads, which slashed costs by Rs 383.53 crore—smart savings that stretch the budget further.
To guarantee top-notch quality in Punjab road repairs, Mann highlighted a new step: the state’s first “Road Infrastructure Development Meeting.” Officials from the Mandi Board, contractors, and other experts gathered to hash out details. Mann stressed that no one should cut corners on quality, and maintenance must stay solid no matter what.
For added safety, especially during foggy winters or nighttime drives, the project includes a Rs 91.83 crore road safety push on these upgraded rural link roads. This means reflective signs, better lighting, and other features to protect drivers and keep Punjab’s roads safer for everyone.
