BJP Leader Blasts Punjab AAP Government Over Flood Crisis
In a sharp critique from Chandigarh, BJP national General Secretary Tarun Chugh slammed the AAP government in Punjab on Thursday. He directly blamed Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal for turning a regular flood season into what he called a "Mann-made disaster." Chugh argued that poor planning and delays made a natural challenge spiral into a heartbreaking human tragedy.
Speaking out strongly, Chugh said, "The AAP government’s incompetence and delays in Punjab turned a seasonal issue into a full-blown crisis. This isn’t just flooding—it’s a disaster created by Mann’s failures." He pointed to key mistakes, like how the government floated tenders for desilting the Sutlej River on June 9 but backed off just weeks later.
Here’s what went wrong, according to Chugh: A public interest litigation (PIL) hit the courts on July 25, and by August 1, the Punjab government told the court it wouldn’t finalize any desilting tenders. Only 17 days after that, heavy rains hit, and Punjab was underwater. "If the Mann government had fought for the people in court and acted fast after the 2023 floods, lakhs of Punjabis wouldn’t be facing this devastation today," Chugh stated.
Experts had warned for months about the dangers—silt buildup in the Sutlej River, weak embankments, and unchecked creeks acting like a ticking time bomb. But Chugh accused the AAP team of ignoring these red flags. "Instead of clearing the blockages, they made excuses and surrendered without even a court order. This isn’t leadership; it’s a betrayal of Punjab’s people," he added.
Raising eyebrows, Chugh questioned if the sand mafia played a role in the government’s decisions. "Desilting would flood the market with cheap sand and crash prices. Was Mann protecting ordinary Punjabis or the mafia’s profits? That’s why locals are calling this not a natural flood, but a Mann-made disaster."
Chugh didn’t spare the opposition either. He hit out at the Congress party for staying silent during the chaos. "The Gandhi family and Mallikarjun Kharge watched as Punjabis suffered, giving AAP a free pass to mess up the state. Both parties are now exposed to the people of Punjab."
Demanding real answers, Chugh called for a full investigation. He wants a white paper on all decisions from June 9 to August 17, details on officials who advised dropping the tenders, and a probe into any mafia links. "Punjabis deserve the truth. The state won’t forget those who put politics and profits over people’s lives," he concluded. As flood recovery efforts continue in Punjab, this political row highlights growing calls for accountability in handling natural disasters.
