Punjab police in Amritsar scored a big win against cross-border drug smuggling on Saturday. Their Counter Intelligence unit busted a heroin trafficking network and nabbed one key player carrying more than 5 kilograms of the drug.
The suspect, Pawandeep Singh from Beharwal village in Amritsar, got caught red-handed. Punjab’s Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, said Pawandeep worked directly under Harpal Singh, a guy from Kohala village in Amritsar who moved to the US two years ago. Now based abroad, Harpal links up with smugglers in Pakistan to shuttle drugs and weapons over the border using drones.
DGP Yadav explained that Harpal kept a low profile at first after heading to the States, but soon dove into the narcotics trade. Acting on solid tips, the CI team in Amritsar tracked a planned pickup of a drug shipment near Dhanoe Kalan village along the India-Pakistan border. They stopped Pawandeep near Beharwal as he headed to hand off the goods to someone else, seizing 5.032 kg of heroin right from him.
Cops are now digging deeper to uncover the full web of suppliers and buyers in this cross-border narcotics ring. They’ve filed charges under sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar.
This bust comes hot on the heels of another major crackdown. On Friday, Punjab’s Anti-Narcotics Task Force in the Border Range teamed up with the Border Security Force to smash a smuggling operation run by foreign-based gangster Harpreet Singh, better known as Happy Jatt. They arrested his top operative, Sajan Singh alias Billa, and grabbed 25 packets of heroin totaling 25.9 kg, plus a high-tech 9mm Glock pistol.
These quick strikes highlight Punjab police’s push to dismantle narco-terror networks fueling drug smuggling from Pakistan into India.
