Punjab Ministers Lead Cleanliness Drive in Flood-Hit Areas
In a strong push to support flood-affected communities, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains urged local leaders, youth clubs, and Aam Aadmi Party workers to join the ongoing cleanliness campaign in Sri Anandpur Sahib constituency. Speaking in Chandigarh on Monday, Bains kicked off the sanitisation drive from Nangal, aiming to cover all flood-ravaged villages.
The campaign comes as a vital response to recent floods that damaged over 100 villages in the area, destroying crops, livestock, and homes. Tents and disinfectant sprays have arrived, while medical teams provide vaccinations and care for animals. Bains emphasized that every village panch and sarpanch must launch local cleanliness efforts in their gram panchayats. He added that Aam Aadmi Clinics continue to operate smoothly, and government schools have reopened after deep cleaning.
During his visit, Bains rode in a high-tech sanitising vehicle equipped with a large tank for spraying disinfectants. He announced that fogging operations will run for the next 15 days, overseen by special teams. "Protecting people’s lives is our top priority," Bains said, highlighting the Punjab government’s commitment through the extended Operation Rahat to reach every affected family with aid.
In a related move, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan inaugurated a major flood relief warehouse on Ajnala Road in Amritsar. Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO praised the state government’s dedicated relief and rehabilitation work, promising fair compensation to flood victims.
The warehouse, set up with help from Rajya Sabha MP Padma Shri Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, SUN Foundation, and World Punjabi Organisation, stocks essential supplies to speed up recovery in Amritsar district. It includes 50 tractors and JCB machines for clearing garbage, 200 fogging machines to prevent diseases, 1,000 utensil kits, 500 metric tonnes of fodder, 500 quintals of rice for below-poverty-line families, plus folding beds, mattresses, bed sheets, blankets, chairs, gas stoves, and medical kits.
District authorities in Amritsar will map households and villages to distribute these items efficiently. Tractors and JCBs will head to impacted areas, coordinated by SDMs and tehsildars.
Meanwhile, a separate cleanliness campaign started in Killianwali and Usman Khera villages in Fazilka, showing Punjab’s all-out effort to restore normalcy after the floods. These initiatives aim to tackle sanitation challenges and support recovery in flood-affected Punjab regions.
