Punjab: Janata Party chief moves High Court for protection from arrest

In Chandigarh, police clashed over the custody of Janata Party leader Navneet Chaturvedi. The dispute began after the state’s own police said they had a case against him while the local Chandigarh Police took him into their protection.

Chaturvedi, who claims to lead the Janata Party’s bid for a Rajya Sabha seat, filed a petition with the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He asked the court to keep him out of jail for ten days and to force Punjab Police to hand over the first‐information report (FIR) that was filed against him. He also said Punjab police tried to abduct him on Tuesday.

The opposite side is no less dramatic. Punjab Police filed their own petition in the same High Court, demanding Chaturvedi’s custody. After the FIR was registered in Ropar, Punjab police sent officers to Chandigarh to arrest him, but the Chandigarh Police stepped in and kept him under their guard.

Why the drama? According to Punjab police, several members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Karnataka Vidhan Sabha (state assembly) filed multiple FIRs. They say their signatures were forged on nomination papers that Chaturvedi submitted for a Rajya Sabha by‑poll. Chaturvedi filed two nominations—one on October 6 and another on October 13.

The allegations are serious. The AAP MLAs claim that a handwritten list of proposers, supposedly signed by them, was attached to Chaturvedi’s nomination papers. They say the documents were circulated online and that the signatures were fabricated without their permission. Using forged signatures on a constitutional document is treated as forgery, cheating and a criminal conspiracy.

Because of these complaints, different police stations in the MLAs’ constituencies have registered FIRs against Chaturvedi. In response, the Advocate General of Punjab, Maninderjit Singh Bedi, and Additional Advocate General Chanchal Singla requested that Chaturvedi’s custody be transferred to Punjab Police and that disciplinary action be taken against those defying court orders.

The situation remains fluid. The High Court’s decision on Chaturvedi’s bail and the later direction to Punjab Police could change how the police handle the case. For now, the conflict between the two police forces and the high‑profile claim of forgery keep the story in the headlines—drawing attention from both political circles and the public watching the unfolding behind‑closed‑doors legal drama.
