Punjab minister Harpal Singh Cheema called on Thursday for an independent judicial inquiry into the death of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who reportedly took his own life on Oct. 7. Cheema posted his plea on X, where he highlighted incidents such as a shoe thrown at the Chief Justice of India and the alleged suicide as symptoms of growing violence against Dalits under BJP rule.
“I see no end to the oppression of Dalits,” Cheema wrote, adding the hashtag #DalitLivesMatter. “The BJP must face justice for these atrocities.” His post sparked comments from other party leaders.
Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal expressed deep anguish over Kumar’s death, blaming caste‑based harassment. “The officer was pressured to the point of suicide,” Kejriwal said on X. “Those responsible must face the harshest punishment.”
The Communist Party of India’s Central Control Commission chairman, K Narayana, urged the centre and the Haryana government to launch a judicial probe and to provide compensation to the officer’s family. He condemned the harassment that led to Kumar’s tragic end, citing reports of the officer’s mental and professional abuse by senior officials like DGP Shatrujit Kumar.
Chandigarh Police filed a formal FIR on Oct. 9 against Haryana Director General of Police Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya. The complaint came from IAS officer Amneet Puran Kumar, the widow of the late Y Puran Kumar, who was found dead at his home. The FIR accuses the officials of abetting suicide and caste‑based harassment, citing Sections 108 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The case has drawn widespread attention to the treatment of Dalit officers in Haryana and the broader implications of caste‑based discrimination in India’s police force. The opposition parties have demanded a swift, transparent investigation, while federal authorities note they will cooperate with any inquiry. The matter remains under close scrutiny as authorities seek to clarify the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
