Opposition leaders in Punjab are slamming Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s decision to call a special session of the state Assembly, calling it a move to dodge the government’s shortcomings instead of tackling real problems for everyday people.
Punjab Congress chief and MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring didn’t hold back in an interview with . He said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government talks a big game but has delivered very little on the ground. “What do they plan to showcase in this special session? It’s all about hiding their failures. They’ll claim all sorts of achievements, but until people see real changes, nothing shifts,” Warring told reporters.
He zeroed in on the AAP’s poor handling of recent floods, saying residents feel the government totally dropped the ball. Warring demanded answers on the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), accusing the administration of diverting relief money. He pointed to a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report that flags Rs 9,000 crore in unused funds. “People want to know where that money went. We need a real debate on these issues during the session,” he added.
Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa echoed the frustration, questioning why the Punjab government keeps holding these special Assembly sessions without any follow-through. Speaking to reporters, Bajwa asked Mann directly: “What came out of the last special sessions? What actual results did we get?”
Bajwa highlighted past flops, like the August 2022 resolution pushing for Chandigarh’s transfer to Punjab. “Nothing happened after that—zero progress,” he said. He also brought up the October 2022 session on ‘Operation Lotus,’ where AAP accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to buy off their MLAs with cash offers. One AAP MLA even filed a police complaint with the Vigilance Bureau. “Each of these sessions costs taxpayers a crore rupees. What became of Operation Lotus? Again, nothing. And ironically, that same MLA, Sheetal Angural, ended up joining the BJP,” Bajwa noted.
Both Warring and Bajwa stressed that Friday’s special session in the Punjab Assembly shouldn’t turn into another empty political stunt. They urged a focus on holding the government accountable and delivering much-needed relief to flood-hit families and other struggling citizens in Punjab.
