Harish Rawat Supports Rahul Gandhi’s Claims of Vote Theft in Elections
Senior Congress leader and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat has thrown his weight behind Rahul Gandhi’s explosive allegations of vote theft in Indian elections. Speaking to in Dehradun on Thursday, Rawat called Gandhi’s revelations a "harsh truth" that many have suspected for years.
Rawat didn’t hold back on the Election Commission of India (ECI). He accused the poll body of behaving like a political party, dodging tough questions instead of launching a fair probe. "Rahul Gandhi has exposed what we’ve all felt in recent elections," Rawat said. "Votes from certain communities and followers of specific ideologies are suddenly vanishing. At the same time, fake names with single-line, uncheckable addresses are popping up in huge numbers, often shifted from other areas. This is a massive problem."
Rawat slammed the ECI for brushing off these claims without a proper investigation. "They’re acting just like a political outfit, avoiding answers," he added.
Rahul Gandhi’s Fresh Allegations from Karnataka
This support comes right after Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, raised the alarm on vote manipulation in Karnataka’s Aland constituency. At a press conference, Gandhi claimed someone tried to wipe out over 6,000 voters’ names from the voter list there.
"In Aland, Karnataka, 6,018 votes were targeted for deletion," Gandhi explained. "We don’t know the full scale of deletions in the 2023 elections, but this got caught by sheer luck. A booth-level officer spotted that her uncle’s vote had been removed."
Gandhi went further, pointing fingers at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He alleged the CEC knows about the fraud—deleting real voters and adding fakes—and is shielding the "vote chor" (vote thieves). "I have 10% proof that CEC Gyanesh Kumar is protecting these vote thieves," Gandhi said boldly.
According to Gandhi, a coordinated group uses centralized software to impersonate genuine voters and tamper with lists. He also revealed insider help: "We’re now getting tips from within the Election Commission. This wasn’t happening before, but it is now—and it won’t stop. The people of India, especially the youth, won’t tolerate vote chori. Once they realize their votes are being stolen, real power will shift."
ECI and Karnataka Officials Push Back
The ECI quickly dismissed Gandhi’s vote theft allegations as "baseless and incorrect." They stressed that no one outside the system can delete votes online—it’s tightly controlled.
Karnataka’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) echoed this in a detailed statement. Back in December 2022, the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) in Aland got 6,018 online Form 7 applications to delete voters from the 46-Aland Legislative Assembly Constituency. Suspecting foul play with such a bulk submission, officials verified every single one through ERO, Assistant ERO, and Booth Level Officers (BLOs).
The result? Only 24 applications checked out as genuine, leading to those deletions. The remaining 5,994 were fake or incorrect and got rejected outright—no votes were removed. Plus, the CEO noted that police filed an FIR in 2023 over the incident.
Gandhi isn’t buying it. He claims the probe into this alleged election fraud has dragged on for over two years, with the ECI ignoring letters from the Crime Investigation Department (CID). To him, that’s more evidence the CEC is covering for vote thieves.
As debates over voter list manipulation heat up, these claims spotlight bigger concerns about fair elections in India. Will the ECI step up with transparency? Stay tuned as this story unfolds.
