Rahul Gandhi and CPI(M) leader MA Baby offer condolences after deadly rains flood Kolkata

Heavy rains battered Kolkata on Tuesday, leading to tragic electrocution deaths and widespread chaos. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his heartbreak, saying his thoughts are with the people of Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal facing devastation from nonstop rainfall and flooding. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the ordeal.

Gandhi didn’t stop at words—he called on Congress workers in Bengal to step up and provide all possible support to those hit hard. He also urged state and central governments to move quickly to restore normalcy after the Kolkata flooding.

Echoing Gandhi’s sentiments, CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby posted on X that he’s deeply saddened by the loss of more than 10 lives to electrocution amid the heavy rains and flooding in Kolkata. “Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” he wrote. Like Gandhi, Baby appealed to party units and supporters to lead relief and rehabilitation efforts for the affected people.

The storm dumped a month’s worth of rain—about 252 mm—in just five hours, with 185 mm falling between 2:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. A high tide in the Hooghly River at the peak of the downpour made things worse, causing severe waterlogging across the city. At least 10 people died from electrocution in West Bengal, including eight in Kolkata.

Trains and metro services ground to a halt, and traffic came to a complete standstill as nearly every road turned into a river. Places like Garia saw the heaviest downpour at 332 mm, followed by Jodhpur Park with 285 mm, Ballygunge at 264 mm, Ultadanga at 207 mm, and Maniktala at 169 mm, according to Kolkata Municipal Corporation data.

By Wednesday morning, the situation started to improve, bringing some relief to residents still reeling from the West Bengal heavy rainfall impacts.
