Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in India’s lower house, will travel to Assam this Friday to pay tribute to the late singer Zubeen Garg, who died suddenly in Singapore.
Gandhi is scheduled to arrive in Sonapur, on Guwahati’s outskirts, at 1:30 p.m. He will lay fresh flowers on a monument that honors the beloved “Zubeen Da.”
After the floral tribute, he will head to Garg’s home in Kahilipara around 2:30 p.m. to speak directly with the singer’s family and offer his condolences.
The visit comes as communities across the Northeast mourn the loss of one of their most celebrated artists. Zubeen Garg, known for his singing, songwriting and acting, passed away on September 19 while staying in Singapore. His death triggered widespread sorrow and sparked protests demanding a thorough investigation.
Assam’s government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances of Garg’s death. The team has already made several arrests and worked with Singaporean authorities. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the SIT will file its chargesheet by November and that the state will launch a fast‑track court to speed up the trial.
Gandhi’s visit is seen as a gesture of solidarity with Assam’s people and a nod to the state’s rich cultural heritage. Fans, musicians and young residents know Zubeen Garg as an icon of regional pride and artistic excellence.
The political leader’s presence is expected to lift spirits and remind the public that justice for Zubeen Garg remains a priority for the state and national governments alike.
