In the midst of Haryana’s 2024 assembly elections, a political firestorm erupted when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi used a short video clip in his press conference to accuse the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “vote‑chori” (vote theft). The clip featured a woman from Malikpur village who claimed her name was missing from the voter list for the Assembly polls, forcing her to re‑apply for a card.
Later that day, the woman—later identified as Anjali Tyagi—posted a video directly counter‑ing Gandhi’s charges. She said she never heard about “vote‑chori” and that the BJP itself had “cut” her vote accidentally. Tyagi explained that she had voted in the Lok Sabha elections, but when she tried to vote in the Assembly election she found her name missing and had to get a new card, which she received in June. She added that she saw no evidence of deliberate misconduct by the Election Commission or the BJP.
In response, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari posted his own clip, accusing Gandhi of spreading false news and misleading the country. “The lady shown in Rahul Gandhi’s presentation has denied ‘vote‑chori’. Rahul Gandhi lied and used her video wrongly,” Bhandari said, branding the Congress leader “anti‑democracy.”
Gandhi’s press conference already had a sharp tone, blasting the BJP and India’s Election Commission for allegedly manipulating voter rolls. The incident has heightened tensions in Haryana, where Congress has accused the BJP of eroding democratic norms.
The BJP is now framing Tyagi’s denial as evidence that opposition politicians are weaponising misinformation. The clash underscores the heated debate over election integrity in India’s most significant states.
