Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Pay Tribute to Veteran Congress Leader P.P. Thankachan
In a heartfelt moment for Kerala’s political circle, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra mourned the death of veteran Congress leader P.P. Thankachan. The 84-year-old passed away on Thursday night at a private hospital near Kochi after battling age-related health issues for weeks.
Rahul Gandhi shared his sorrow on social media, calling Thankachan a "dedicated leader" who worked tirelessly for Kerala’s people. "He strengthened the Congress family with his commitment and humility. My thoughts are with his loved ones in this time of grief," Rahul wrote.
Priyanka Gandhi echoed the sentiments, remembering Thankachan as the former Kerala Agriculture Minister. "He served the people of Kerala with commitment and passion. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time," she posted.
Thankachan, a lawyer by training, kicked off his political career young. At just 26, he became chairman of his local municipality in Perumbavoor. He climbed the ranks in the Congress party, serving as Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, KPCC President, and convenor of the Congress-led UDF for 14 years. During tough factional fights between K. Karunakaran and A.K. Antony groups, Thankachan stood out as a key problem-solver, always staying loyal to Karunakaran.
Tributes flooded in from leaders across parties. Kerala Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar posted on X, praising Thankachan’s lifelong public service. "As Speaker, Minister, and KPCC President, he dedicated his life to the people and will be remembered with gratitude," the Governor said.
Former Chief Minister A.K. Antony shared a personal note, calling their bond a six-decade friendship that began in the Youth Congress. "We were more than colleagues—we were close friends. Even in factional rivalries, he stayed calm and soft-spoken. I’ve lost another long-time associate," Antony said.
AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal called the loss "huge for the party," highlighting Thankachan’s skill in resolving internal disputes and uniting UDF allies. "He always put the party’s interests first," Venugopal added.
Kerala Congress President Sunny Joseph remembered him as a mentor. "When he led the KPCC, I was Kannur district president. He gave up a judicial career for politics after passing the Munsiff exam. We’ve lost a true guide," Joseph said.
Thankachan leaves behind three children; his wife passed away earlier. His funeral will take place on Saturday in his hometown of Perumbavoor. The Congress leader’s legacy as a humble servant of Kerala politics will live on.
