Chennai and nearby districts are set for moderate showers over the next two days, but several parts of Tamil Nadu will also see higher‑than‑normal temperatures, says the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai.
The RMC’s latest bulletin points to a shift in the wind pattern – with stronger easterly winds – that should bring light to moderate rain to isolated pockets of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram. The rain is expected mainly in the late‑afternoon and evening, with occasional thunder and lightning in some areas.
A new low‑pressure system has formed over the east‑central Bay of Bengal and the Myanmar coast. While it will not hit Tamil Nadu directly, the extra moisture and changes in upper‑air winds could trigger scattered showers along the coast and inland. The system is moving north‑northwest toward Myanmar and Bangladesh, but its indirect effects could keep rain coming into Chennai and the surrounding districts.
High temperatures are also on the cards. The RMC warns that some areas may see daytime peaks 3‑4 °C above the seasonal average. Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Salem and Vellore could reach 37‑38 °C (98‑100 °F) on Monday. Coastal towns, including Puducherry and Karaikal, might see a noticeable heat rise. In Chennai, the maximum is predicted at about 35 °C (95 °F), with the overnight low staying near 26 °C (79 °F).
“We’re in a weak phase of the northeast monsoon, but the new low‑pressure system over the Bay could revive rainfall after a short break,” a senior RMC meteorologist said. Residents are urged to stay alert for sudden weather changes and to avoid water‑logged roads during the brief downpours.
Key takeaways:
- Expect moderate rain in Chennai and surrounding districts late in the day.
- High temperatures could hit 37‑38 °C (almost 100 °F) in several cities.
- The new low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal may keep rain coming in the region despite not hitting directly.
