Srinagar, Nov. 5 – Heavy rain fell over the plains of Jammu and Kashmir as the region’s high‑altitude zones received the season’s first snowfall. The monsoon‑free stretch of the state has finally been broken by snow that fell across Gulmarg, Sonamarg and other peaks in the past 24 hours, meteorologists say.

“Sonamarg saw about 2 inches of snow on the ground,” an official from the Meteorological Department told . “Gulmarg and Pir Ki Gali on the Mughal road had 1‑2 inches, Sinthan Pass got 5‑6 inches, and Sadhna Top recorded 6 inches.” Rain and a cool breeze also washed over the Valley’s lower plains, ending a month‑long dry spell.

The department expects the weather to clear by this afternoon, but cautions that the region will stay dry for the next ten days. Locals in the Valley have started pulling out woollen snowsuits, while residents in the countryside don the loose tweed “Pheran” to stay warm. Wind from the snow‑clad mountains is likely to push temperatures even lower overnight.

Heavy snowfall at Zojila Pass, which connects Kashmir to Ladakh, has forced the closure of the Srinagar‑Leh highway. Travelers can expect delays while the road authorities clear the snow.

Doctors urge people—especially elders and children—to guard against cold air exposure, which can trigger winter chest problems. “Wear a woollen muffler or wrap when you leave your home,” said pulmonologist Dr. Naveed Nazir Shah. “Use lukewarm water and avoid chilled foods for children and the elderly.” School administrators have been told to hold morning assemblies indoors or postpone them until the temperature rises.

Despite the chilly conditions, winter is a prime tourist season in Kashmir. Popular hill stations like Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam offer centrally heated rooms and 24/7 hot water, making the stay comfortable for visitors. Many tourists find winter the best time to explore Kashmir’s snowy landscapes, thanks to affordable lodging, transport and dining options.

As the cold sets in, Kashmiris are preparing to welcome guests while bracing themselves for the harsh weather ahead.
