Rain-triggered landslide hits bus in Himachal; 15 killed, three rescued (Lead)

A heavy‑rain landslide in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district struck a private bus on Tuesday, killing at least 15 passengers and leaving three children safe after rescue teams pulled them from the wreckage.

The bus was traveling from Marotan to Ghumarwin when the slope at Bhallupul in the Jhanduta subdivision collapsed. Rain that started on Monday kept the area wet, making the ground unstable and triggering the disaster. Roughly 35 people had been on board, and rescue crews have already recovered 15 bodies from the mangled vehicle.

Three children were transported alive to the government hospital in Barthin and to AIIMS Bilaspur, where they are receiving treatment. Rescue teams, along with the State Disaster Response Force and local police, have been clearing debris around the site and searching for missing passengers late into the night.

State officials confirmed that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu has expressed deep grief over the loss and is coordinating with the district administration to speed up relief and rescue operations. He ordered injured passengers be moved immediately to hospitals and to set up adequate medical support.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “saddening” and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each family of a victim. BJP President J.P. Nadda, who hails from Bilaspur, posted his condolences on X and urged the state’s opposition leader, Jayaram Thakur, the state BJP chief Rajeev Bindal, and party workers to help the survivors. He also requested AIIMS Bilaspur to provide prompt medical care.

Home Minister Amit Shah said he was deeply saddened by the tragedy and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.

The landslide has turned Bilaspur into a frantic search and rescue zone. Local authorities are working round‑the‑clock to clear the site, locate missing passengers, and coordinate medical and financial support for affected families.
