India’s telecom scene just got a big boost with Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching BSNL’s homegrown 4G network on Saturday. The event kicked off from Jharsuguda in Odisha, right alongside BSNL’s 25th anniversary celebrations. This move puts India on the path to becoming a self-reliant powerhouse in technology.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma joined the virtual launch with other chief ministers and union ministers. Speaking at the Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Centre, Sharma praised Modi’s leadership. “Today marks 25 years of BSNL, and thanks to PM Modi’s efforts, we’re inaugurating 92,633 4G towers across India,” he said. In Rajasthan alone, 5,655 towers are now live. “This isn’t just about numbers—it’s a huge step toward a new, self-reliant India.”
What makes this special? The entire BSNL 4G network is fully indigenous, built by Indian institutions and companies. Sharma highlighted that India now stands among just five countries with completely home-developed 4G technology. Even better, these advanced towers can upgrade to 5G through simple software updates, making them future-proof.
The rollout falls under the Digital Bharat Nidhi scheme, aiming to connect every corner of the country. BSNL leads key government projects like the 4G Saturation Scheme, bringing coverage to rural and underserved villages that were previously out of reach.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia shared exciting details a day earlier. He noted the 4G stack will cover nearly 98,000 sites nationwide, already serving 22 million customers. “It’s fully software-driven, cloud-based, and ready for the future—most importantly, it upgrades seamlessly to 5G,” Scindia said. He emphasized the government’s dual focus: improving connectivity while building India’s telecom manufacturing ecosystem.
Scindia pointed to growing global interest. “The world is seriously investing in manufacturing here,” he added. Companies like Cisco are partnering with Indian firms such as Flex, Ericsson with VVDN and Jabil, and Dixon expanding operations. “India isn’t just about services anymore—we’re becoming a major hub for telecom equipment manufacturing.”
BSNL’s pan-India 4G services use indigenous C-DoT core technology, integrated with TCS and Tejas networks. This aligns perfectly with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, pushing for self-reliance. Modi formally started the nationwide rollout, activating 92,633 sites—including over 14,000 from the 4G saturation project. It’s a win for digital India, connecting millions and setting the stage for 5G.
