Jaipur, Oct 24 – The Congress party is back in the middle of Rajasthan’s political spotlight as it prepares to name new district presidents. After gathering reports from each district, the final list is expected to be handed over to the All‑India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi.
Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal spent all of Friday in a marathon meeting in Delhi to finalize the appointments. The discussion ran from morning to evening and gathered key party figures, including Rajasthan state in‑charge Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Govind Singh Dotasra, and opposition leader Tikaram Jully. The core of the meeting focused on balancing caste representation, political influence, and regional dynamics when short‑listing names from the 50 districts.
Sources say that the consensus among Randhawa, Dotasra and Jully is crucial for the final selections. In addition to the large meeting, Dotasra and Jully held a separate strategy session at Randhawa’s Delhi home to review district‑level feedback and potential candidates. Once the report is ready, it will go to Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, for his approval before the official announcement.
The buzz isn’t just on paper. Since Diwali, several contenders have been camping in Delhi, staying in hotels and the Rajasthan State Guest House, trying to lobby party leaders. Some even use festive visits and Diwali greetings to gain influence. The competition intensifies in districts that lack a sitting Congress Member of Parliament (MP) or Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), where the party’s future presence hinges on the new appointment.
In a few districts, the picture is clearer. Sikar is dominated by Dotasra’s influence, Jhunjhunu by MP Brijendra Singh Ola, Jodhpur by former chief minister Ashok Gehlot, and Tonk and Bharatpur by actors Sachin Pilot and Bhanwar Jitendra Singh, respectively. These leaders are expected to play a decisive role in choosing their district presidents.
With hundreds of aspirants across 50 districts, the Congress’s reshuffle has sparked high anticipation among party members and voters alike. Party insiders say the final list could be revealed as early as Friday evening, marking a significant step in Congress’s organisational revival in Rajasthan.
The outcome will shape the party’s strategy for upcoming elections, as the new district presidents will lead local campaigns and rally support in their regions. Observers watch closely to see how the Congress party positions itself in a state where politics is fiercely contested.
